HOW TO CARE FOR 45NRTH OLAND BOOTS
Share
One of the best things about new 45NRTH Oland boots is its waterproof full-grain leather. This type of premium leather requires regular care and conditioning to preserve its health and integrity. Use our simple guide to care for your 45NRTH Oland boots so you can keep them looking and performing as great as the day you received them.
It doesn’t take much time or skill to retain the Oland’s premium quality. To start, you will need a few supplies:
- Soft towel
- Horsehair brush
- Small bowl of warm water
- Leather conditioner specifically designed for use on waterproof leather. We recommend Red Wing's Leather Cream
- Leather protector. We recommend Red Wing Leather Protector
When your boots appear dirty or have a dull finish, the leather is telling you it needs conditioning. Care for your boots with three basic steps: cleaning, conditioning and protecting.
First, remove the laces to expose the tongue and gussets of the boot. Start by cleaning off as much dirt and residue as possible with the horsehair brush. This removes large dirt particles from the surface of the leather. If your boots are really caked with mud, use a brush with nylon bristles and gently whisk away the dirt.
Next, take a soft towel and wipe down the surface of the leather with warm water. Be sure to wipe the overlay on the tongue and behind the laces. This process removes smaller dust particles and contaminants, which provides greater access to the pores and deep fibers of the leather. Let the boots dry for 30 minutes.
Once the boots are dry, begin the conditioning process by applying the leather conditioner with a soft towel. This will deeply penetrate the fibers, keeping the leather pliable and breathable. Conditioning is not only healthy for the full grain leather, it will also clean scuffs and small abrasions to improve the leather’s visual quality. Don’t forget to treat the underlay behind the laces.
Right after applying the leather conditioner, you will see the boot in its darkest form, as pictured below. Darkening is normal and means the conditioner is working. The leather will begin to gradually lighten after a few rides.
The final—and equally important—step is applying a leather protector. Hold the spray bottle about eight inches from the leather and spray evenly and thoroughly (or follow the specific product instructions). The protector acts like a long-lasting waterproofing (DWR) treatment, preventing water, salt and other grime from entering the leather fibers.
Just remember, when the leather starts looking dry, dull or dirty, it is time to clean, condition and protect again.
Enjoy the ride!
